Police brutalize peaceful protestors in Istanbul and Ankara

Istanbul police brutalized thousands of peaceful protestors who gathered at Taksim Square Saturday evening, upon the call by Taksim Solidarity platform, to leave carnations in the square in memory of the four people murdered by police in Gezi protests.

Police attacked the people during their peaceful protest, using intense pressure water, tear gas and rubber bullet, also attacking many protestors with sticks and wounding many, including ANF reporter Zeynep Kuray.

Hundreds of plainclothes policemen, as well as a group carrying batons, assisted the brutal attack of riot police and riot control vehicles against protestors. Riot policemen hid the numbers on their helmets.

Clashes spread to Harbiye, Sıraselviler and İstiklal in a short time.

Peaceful protestors on Dikmen and Kennedy Avenue were also attacked by police as they gathered in the evening in solidarity with the ongoing Gezi protests, chanting the slogan “Everywhere Taksim, everywhere resistance”. Severe clashes broke out between protestors and police and lasted till midnight.

People protesting the police terror in their houses were also targeted by attacks, with police spreying pressure water into these houses with riot control vehicles.

Many protestors were taken into custody.
