Police detain 13 KESK union members in Istanbul

Union members were demanding the reinstatement of dismissed workers.

Police on Monday detained 13 KESK (Public Workers Confederation) members when they tried to organise the 68th vigil demanding the reinstatement at work of those dismissed through emergency legislation.

The union members were detained in Bakırköy and Kadıköy districts in Istanbul.

Last Saturday police had taken into custody union members who wanted to stage an action in Bakırköy alleging ‘security’ reasons.

CHP deputy Ali Şeker arrived in Bakırköy to support the workers and tried to talk the police out of their decision to disperse the sit-in.

The police officers however, surrounded the members of KESK who were seated with banners opened, battered them and took 13 people into custody.

The police, who prevented the press from taking pictures, cordoned off the KESK members to isolate them from the press.

It has been learned that the union members taken into custody are: Nursel Tanriverdi, Ozge Astan, İlhan Kaya, Adem Erdem, Nuğyen Nedim, Ömer in Kadıköy, while Hüseyin Demir, Songül Tunçdemir, Özgür Karataş, Abdullah Senyuva, Maşuk Öztekin, Hüda Yıldırım and their descendant names were not taken into custody.
