Police intervenes protestors in Mersin before the opening of Mediterranean Games

Mersin police have intervened dozens of peaceful protestors staying in tents in the central Barış Square in solidarity with the Gezi Park resistance.

The operation against the group was carried out by riot control vehicles and hundreds of riot police. The operation came at midnight, before the official opening of 17th Mediterranean Games in the city on Thursday. Police removed all the tents and banners in the square.

Police have warned the group to remove the tents for the last two days. The peaceful protestors in Barış Meydanı (Peace Square) did set up tents and formed a commune living in the area two weeks ago, just like what was done in Gezi Park before the brutal police attack on June 15.

Speaking to ANF before the mass protest to take place Thursday afternoon, protestors in the area said police didn't intervene in the demonstration in Mersin because the government avoided the risk of getting reaction before the opening of the games which will be attended by a number of countries.

Protestors on Ankara's Kennedy Avenue were also attacked by police early Thursday night. Clashes reported in the area.
