Police operation targets KESK members

Over 100 people have been taken into custody in a police operation against the Confederation of Public Workers' Unions (KESK) early on Tuesday morning.

It is reported that a warrant of arrest has been issued for 167 people in the scope of the so-called "DHKP-C operation".

A number of houses were raided this morning in the operation which was simultaneously carried out in 29 cities, including İzmir, Antalya, Aydın, Adana, Antakya and Bursa.

Among the detainees are also KESK Central Executive Board member Akman Şimşek whose office at KESK main building is also being searched by police teams while we write.

SES Ankara Branch Chair member Leyla Durmaz, who suffers from cancer, was reportedly taken into custody during her chemotherapy treatment at a hospital in Ankara.

Sixteen public workers in Bursa, ten in Balıkesir, ten in İzmir, seven in Çanakkale, three in Aydın and two in Antalya have also been taken into custody in the scope of the operation.

In a written statement on the operation, KESK Central Office evaluated the operation as the most recent attack carried out with an aim of supression of the confederation. KESK will hold a press conference on the operation in front of the central office in Ankara today.
