Police use violence against students protesting in Izmir

After Istanbul, another protest was also attacked by police in Izmir. The action was directed against the arrest of two Boğaziçi students. At least 27 were taken into custody.

After nearly a hundred students were taken into custody by police in Istanbul on Monday during a protest against the appointment of AKP politician Melih Bulu as rector of Boğaziçi University, a number of arrests have also been reported in Izmir. The Solidarity Alliance of Universities in the western Turkish coastal province had called for a "March of Dignity" for two students of Boğaziçi University who were imprisoned two days ago for alleged sedition.

According to the latest information, 27 students were arrested in Izmir in front of the ÖSYM headquarters, the Center for Student Selection, and the Turkish Council of Higher Education, YÖK in Alsancak district, with the use of force. Representatives of the press have been subjected to GBT (criminal record check) of their state-stored data, and some media workers reported that their memory cards were confiscated and photos deleted. Several passers-by who were critical of the police's treatment of the students were also subjected to a GBT check.
