President Gül authorized new investigation on Madimak massacre

President Abdullah Gül has authorized the State Audit Board (DDK) "to investigate and examine the Madýmak incident in its entirety with regard to its occurrence, targets, results and impacts, and also with regard to its connection to some incidents". The president made his decision known via a statement posted on the Presidency website. The statement adds that "For all concerned parties, the Madýmak incident carries deep ambiguities and doubts with regard to the understanding of the real content of the incidents and with regard to the conclusions that have previously been driven".

On 2 July 1993 an arson attack on the Madimak hotel (in Sivas), which was hosting an Alevi cultural festival, left 35 people dead.

Most of the dead were students and prominent intellectuals. The arson attack was blamed on radical Islamists. Last March the case on the Sivas massacre was dropped by the Court in Ankara which ruled that the charges against the suspects exceeded the statute of limitations.
