Prisoners end hunger strike

Twenty-one inmates in Tekirdağ F Type Prison No 2 who were on an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike since 25 March have ended their strike following the acceptance of their demands by the prison administration.

Inmates on strike, nineteen tried in PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) case and two others in Revolutionary Headquarters Organization case, started the indefinite-irreversible hunger strike 36 days ago to protest against the impositions and arbitrary practices of the prison administration and to demand the improvement of prison conditions.

Following a meeting with the prosecutor and administrators of the prison on Saturday, a delegation of IHD (Human Rights Association) and TUAD (Association for Solidarity with the Families of Prisoners) paid a visit to the inmates on strike on Monday. After the meeting with the inmates, lawyers Sinan Zincir, Fazıl Ahmet Tamer and Gülizer Tuncer announced the ending of the strike late Monday.

Speaking to ETHA (Etkin News Agency), lawyer Sinan Zincir said the prison administration has promised to take urgent steps to improve the prison conditions and agreed on taking mutual steps of goodwill with inmates.

The demands of prisoners were,

-ending of physical and pyshological tortures and procedural-administrative act against relevant prison officials

-equal treatment to all prisoners in terms of the right to visit

-ending of the seizure of prisoners' notebooks by the prison staff and arbitrary practices during searches

-ending of the disciplinary punishments

-improvement of conditions of inmates serving a heavy life sentence

-withdrawal of the decision imposing 10 books and 10 papers restriction

-practice of changes of inmates' places according to demands

-ending of the naked body search while entering the prison
