The prisoners on hunger strike in Kandýra Prison No 1 have refused to receive medical examination for the last one week to protest against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan and his government’s attitude towards the protest.
The fast by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and Kurdistan Women’s Liberation Party (PAJK) has entered the 62nd day with government authorities taking no concrete steps for the fulfillment of the demands highlighted, right to defense in mother tongue and the ending of solitary confinement of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The two groups, the first of which went on hunger strike on 12 September and the other on 15 October, have refused to receive medical treatment as a “stance against the government’s attitude” in their own words.
According to what lawyers say, the fasting prisoners in Kandýra Prison commented the solidarity demonstrations outside as being “good in terms of supporting the protesting prisoners" but asked to increase efforts outside”.
On the other hand, some prisoners have difficulty in walking and moving. Prisoners have yet to get an answer for their demand to see a delegation of Turkish Medical Association (TTB).
