Prof. Alex Callinicos, Editorial Board Member of the quarterly journal International Socialism and the United Kingdom (UK) representative of Aktuel Marx, which focuses on socialist theory, called for genuine peace to be guaranteed.

The message sent to the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) regarding Abdullah Öcalan’s “Call for Peace and a Democratic Society” and the 12th Congress decisions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is as follows:

“I welcome the fact that the PKK’s recent decisions have offered renewed hope for peace to the peoples of Turkey. However, the initiative taken by the PKK and Mr. Öcalan has now clearly placed the responsibility in the hands of the government. It is now unquestionably Turkey’s responsibility to end all repression against Kurdish politics, to stop the imprisonment and prosecution of those who support the Kurds, to allow Kurdish refugees to return, and to recognize that all Kurds must enjoy the same rights as other citizens of Turkey. Only these measures can guarantee a genuine peace and ensure the democratization of Turkey. Such steps can also help unify the working class in Turkey and contribute to democratic and social struggles across the region.”
