Public resistance in Taksim growing
The public resistance in Istanbul's main Taksim Square is growing as more and more people are taking to the streets, not only in Istanbul but also across the country, in solidarity with Gezi Park protestors.
Tens of thousands have joined the protest since Friday when police drove demonstrators out of the Gezi Park, leading to severe clashes with protestors in and around Taksim the whole day.
The mass resistance is joined by a number of various circles including political parties, NGOs, unions, politicians, intellectuals, artists, students, workers and local people calling on the government to resign.
Clashes across Istanbul continued till very late hours at night with protestors not leaving the streets nor ending the resistance against the excessive force police.
More than a hundred people were injured in clashes yesterday, with some among them reportedly facing very critical situations.
Around a hundred people were taken into custody by police since Friday. There are rumors of killed persons due to the teargas canisters hitting them.
Thousands from the Anatolian side of Istanbul started walking to Taksim at around 5 am, closing the Bosphorus bridge to traffic.
More people have been joining the mass demonstration for which thousands from other provinces have also left for Istanbul since yesterday. The mass demo is expected reach larger masses at the weekend.
Solidarity demonstrations are taking place across the country. Clashes between demonstrators and police also broke out in many other cities including the capital city Ankara where ten thousand people took to the streets last night, clashing with police forces trying to prevent the demonstration. Clashes also broke out in Antalya, Muğla, İzmit and Eskişehir. More protest demos will be taking place in almost all cities today.
Demos are also taking place outside Turkey, mainly in Europe, with people sending messages of solidarity to the demonstrators resisting in Taksim.
