Relatives of killed youngster on trial

The first hearing of the trial against relatives of Cem Aygün, who was killed by police on 30 August 2012, was held at 8th High Criminal Court of Ankara on Thursday.

Twenty-four years-old Cem Aygün was killed by police on the grounds of "disobeying stop warning" in front of Keçiören Hospital in Ankara last August. After Aygün's death, his eight relatives, including his five sisters, were sued on charges of "attempting to kill police officers" while trying to receive information from Ankara Police Headquarters after their brother's death.

58 to 406 years in prison has been asked for Aygün's family who voiced a strong reaction against the legal process imposed on them instead of the murderers of their brother.

Cem's elder sister Aylin Aygün said the followings at yesterday's hearing; "It was only after Cem's burial that we learned the fact that he had been killed by police. We therewith went to Ankara Police Headquarters to obtain information about his death. When the police officer on guard refused our demand and to let us in, we sat in front of the PoliceHeadquarters, after which the police officer pushed my sister and started to hit her on the ground. When another police office, Harun Karakaþ, came there and directed his gun at us, I said him to kill us too."

Cem's other sister Yasemin Eker asked why the reason for Cem's murder hasn't been disclosed in the last 3,5 months.

Agreeing  on an expert witness report on Cem's murder and a request to get videotape records from the Police Headquarters of Ankara, the court board adjourned the trial to a forward date.
