Repression on the increase in the Kurdish region

A number of people were taken into custody in the Kurdish province of Bingöl following simultaneous raids in many houses at early morning hours on Wednesday.

Among those detained is also former co-chair of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Bingöl organization. Detainees have been taken to the Police Headquarters of Bingöl.

The AKP regime’s repression and attacks in the province of Bingöl have remarkable increased in the last one month. The BDP office in the city was subjected to a racist attack on September 16 when at the same time three people were taken into custody in the district of Karlýova.

One day later, BDP Bingöl MP Ýdris Baluken said that the security director of police headquarters threatened BDP members in the city with death.

One other attack against the BDP was carried out on September 12 when 28 people were taken into custody and among them nine were sent to prison as a result of raids in the BDP Bingöl office, municipal services building and a number of houses. Among those arrested was also Karlýova deputy mayor.

On September 23, police severely attacked a protest demonstration in the city, injuring two children who were hit by rubber bullets.

On the other hand, seven people were taken into custody in the province of Batman on Tuesday as clashes broke out following the police intervention in the demo against the 9 October conspiracy against the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) leader Abdullah Öcalan. The journalists in the demo were also attacked with pressure water. Seven detainees in Batman and five others who were detained in Urfa in yesterday’s events have been released this morning.

Most of the protest demonstrations yesterday were intervened and denied permission by Turkish police across the country as thousands of Kurdish people took to the streets to demand freedom for their leader Öcalan. Banners reading “Freedom for Öcalan, status for Kurdistan” were seized in the events in which demonstrators were subjected to severe attacks by police forces.

In the meantime, a statement by the Governor’s office of Þýrnak said that 56 people were taken into custody and among them 32 were sent to prison in the last 20 days on the grounds of being members of the Democratic Patriotic Youth’s Council (DYGM).

The statement noted that nine separate operations were carried out against the DYGM organization from September 14 to October 5.
