Sakine, Fidan and Leyla laid to rest

Tens of thousands turned out today to join the funerals of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez in their hometowns of Dersim, Elbistan and Mersin.

The three Kurdish politicians were killed in Paris on 9 January.

Fidan (Rojbin) Doğan, the Paris representative of the Brussels-based Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) was buried in Elbistan. People in their thousands flock to give Fidan, whose birthday was yesterday, the last salute.

Fidan Doğan\'s coffin was wrapped with a flag of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and, like yesterday in Diyarbakır, mourners were wearing a white scarf symbolizing peace.

An Alevi dede led the crowd in a funeral prayer. Doğan was buried in the Hançıplak neighborhood.

BDP co-chair Gülten Kışanak, as well as BDP deputies Nursel Aydoğan, Ayla Akat Ata, Hasip Kaplan and İbrahim Binici and Diyarbakır mayor Osman Baydemir were at the ceremony for Fidan Doğan.

\"These three women - said in an emotional speech Fidan Doğan\'s father, Hasan - were shot with three bullets to the head. They were savagely killed. Peace is not too difficult to achieve; I hope for peace. I wish my sorrow would be the last.\"

Kışanak made a promise to \"all Kurdish women and to Sakine, Fidan and Leyla: We will bring peace and freedom to this land\".

Kışanak also underlined that \"the killers wanted to kill the peace initiatives of Öcalan by killing Sakine, Fidan and Leyla. But let\'s state this clear: you won\'t succeed\".
