Second phase of the ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan’ campaign launched

The second phase of the global campaign launched on October 10, 2023 demanding freedom for Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question, has been launched.

A press conference was held in Cologne, Germany on the second phase of the global campaign for freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question.

The first phase of the campaign was announced on October 10 by friends of the Kurdish people with press conferences and various events in more than 100 cities around the world.

Since the beginning of the campaign, uninterrupted actions have been carried out. In addition to marches, cards were sent to Öcalan from everywhere as part of the campaign to send 100 thousand cards to Imrali Island Prison, where Öcalan has been held in total isolation.

While a giant march was organized in Cologne as part of the campaign on 17 February, hunger strikes and Justice Vigils are being carried out in prisons in Turkey with the same demand.

During the press briefing in Kurdish, Turkish, English and German in Cologne, it was stated that March 8, International Women's Day, April 4, Abdullah Öcalan's birthday and May 1 will be met with this campaign at the center.

It was emphasized that marches by hundreds of thousands will demand the freedom of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and force the Turkish state to open the door of İmralı.

The press statement demanded the lifting of the isolation, the abolition of the İmralı torture system, the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan as the chief negotiator in the solution of the Kurdish question and an end to the persecution of the Kurdish people.

It was also announced that in the second phase of the campaign, protests will be organized in front of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).

Germany in particular was urged to stop cooperating with the Turkish state.

Highlights from the statements made by the participants at the press conference are as follows:

American global conflict analyst Dr. Thoreau Redcrow: "One of our focuses in the next part of the campaign is to hold the European institutions accountable for refusing to fulfill their legal duty to hold the Turkish state accountable for violations of international law. (Calling for participation in the demonstration in front of the CPT in Strasbourg April 15-19) Thousands of people will stage an act of civil disobedience to force the CPT to fulfill its duties and stop the torture of Abdullah Öcalan."

Sarah Glynn from Scotland: "People like me from around the world have been inspired by Öcalan's ideas and the practical implementation in Rojava. If we dream of a better world, we need a way to turn our idealistic dreams into reality. Öcalan has put forward a philosophy that can help us pave this path. We want to work with him to turn these dreams into reality."

German politician Jörg Detjen: "Öcalan has been in prison for 26 years and has not been able to meet his relatives and families for 36 months. Germany must end its warm relations with Turkey."
