Seven more people hanged in Iran

The Iranian regime has executed 7 more people at the Karaj prison near Tehran.

The Iranian Human Rights organisation website iranhr.net has announced that 10 prisoners at the Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj have been put in solitary confinement and that 7 of them have been executed.

The authorities have not yet made a statement regarding these latest executions. 86 people have been executed in the last 17 days in Iran. According to the Hrana website and Radio Zamaneh, four political prisoners from the Arab minority registered in the province of Ahwaz were executed on 5 December.

On the same day 15 'common criminals' were executed in Ilam central prison and Diesel Abad prison in the East Kurdistan province of Kermanshah.

Iranian official have admitted that 304 people have been executed in Iran in 2013. Amnesty International says that according to 'reliable sources' 234 more people were executed in the month of October, but that this has not been admitted by the Iranian authorities. It is estimated that the real figure of executions is much higher. In 2012 at least 580 people were executed according to human rights organisations.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Harm Reduction International (HRI) claim that the Iranian regime executed over 1,000 people for drug trafficking or drug use in 2010 and 2011. This was three times more than in previous years. The two organisations have stated that over 600 people were executed in 2011 alone, and that 80% of these were 'solely for drug use'.
