Sinn Féin, in conjunction with Justice for Magdalenes is to host the second annual “Flowers for Magdalenes” event in Glasnevin cemetery on 3 March at 2pm.
A representative from Justice for Magdalenes will make an address which will be followed by the laying of flowers at each grave and memorial to the women.
The event which will take place in the week preceding International Women’s Day aims to remember the women of the Magdalene Laundries, many of whom are buried in Glasnevin.
Announcing the event Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald said: “I am pleased to announce that the second annual ‘Flowers for Magdalenes’ event will take place in the lead-in to International Women’s Day. Those who attended the event last year - she added - will remember it as a poignant memorial to the women who lived and died in the Magdalene Laundries".
Flowers for Magdalenes’  added McDonald "is about remembering the women for who they were and who they are – sisters, mothers, daughters, friends. They were not just numbers. They were real women who suffered at the hands of the church and state. They deserve to be remembered, they deserve justice".
