Speaking at the Newroz celebrations in Şırnak Cumhuriyet Square, Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Aysel Tuğluk said that Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan represents the will of the Kurdish people. "We are asking for Öcalan to be set free as he can play his role in the establishment of peace". Newroz was celebrated in Cumhuriyet Square for the first time since 1992. The demonstration was joined by thousands.

Several colourful marches reached Şırnak Cumhuriyet Square from the early hours of the morning. Flags of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), KCK (Kurdish Communities Union), and photos of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan waved for hours.

The posters of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Şırnak deputies Selma Irmak and Faysal Sarıyıldız, who are in jail were also opened. The placards read "Freedom for Öcalan", "status to Kurds", "Democratic liberation, free life, negotiation with Öcalan, free life" and "Happy Newroz".

Messages from BDP's jailed deputies Selma Irmak and Faysal Sarıyıldız were read.
