Six Kurdish civilians killed in Serêkaniyê

A number of civilians and members of armed groups were killed in the West Kurdistan city of Serêkaniyê (Ras el Ayn) as a result of a bombardment by warplanes of the Syrian army on Monday. The bombardment which targeted the spot of armed groups in the city has also claimed the lives of six Kurds, including three children, five of whom are reported to be from the same family.

Warplanes of Syrian military carried out two consecutive bombardments on Monday morning, targeting the government office which has reportedly been used as military quarters by armed groups.

The images ANF obtained from local sources after the bombardment show a number of houses, cars and the sub-structure of the city destroyed. Local sources reported that People's Defence Units (YPG) forces have been enhancing measures in the city.

Eleven wounded civilians were rushed to the State Hospital of Ceylanpýnar (Urfa) after the bombardment. Three among them were later referred to hospitals in Urfa for further medical treatment.

After hundreds of members of armed groups entered the city of Serêkaniyê (Ras el Ayn) over Turkey on 8 November, the city was bombed several times by forces of the Syrian regime, killing at least ten civilians and wounding around 70 others in one week. Around 50 houses were demolished in the mentioned attacks which forced eleven thousand people to migrate from the region.

Two armed groups El Sam and El Nusra suffered heavy losses in clashes with YPG forces in the city two weeks ago when they attacked the people as they took to the streets for the rally organized by the Supreme Kurdish Council. The groups proposed ceasefire following long-lasting clashes, in which their 57 militants were killed, and drew back from the city on 25 November when the ceasefire was accepted by YPG.

Referring to allegations that the Turkish government is enabling the entrance of these armed and allegedly islamist groups to the Kurdish city over its borders, KCK said on 22 November that the Turkish state is enabling the passage of these groups through a line of transportation from Antep-Urfa-Mardin to Aleppo-Serêkaniyê. KCK stated that Turkey is trying to "turn the war in Syria to a war between Kurds and Arabs".

Peace and Democracy Party Mersin deputy Ertuðrul Kürkçü also called attention to the situation in West Kurdistan and pointed out that the Turkish government is enabling Al-Qaida, Al-Nusra and FSA (Free Syrian Army) militants to cross Turkey's border despite the lack of any parliament vote on the issue.
