Social Initiative For Peace to meet with DEM Party

The Social Initiative for Peace will meet with the Imrali delegation and the co-chairs of the DEM Party.

A group of writers, politicians, and academics in Istanbul issued a statement announcing the establishment of a campaign called "Peace and Democracy for All."

The campaign was first launched by 1,045 people. The first signatories of the campaign announced that they would continue their work under the new name "Social Initiative for Peace." 

Twelve of the signatories will meet with the Imrali delegation and the co-chairs of the DEM Party today. The delegation has also requested a meeting with the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş.  

The Social Initiative for Peace said in the statement: “The 'Peace and Democracy for All' campaigna was publicly announced on December 14, 2024, in Istanbul by 40 signatories, and has received the support of 1,045 citizens from various sectors of society.  As the initial signatories, we believe that civil society and citizens have a responsibility to address concerns, ensure transparency, and ensure the process benefits society. With this in mind, we aim to continue our work under the new name 'Social Initiative for Peace.'”

The first step of the campaign will be a meeting scheduled for today, Wednesday, with the Peace Delegation that recently visited Imrali Island, as well as with the co-chairs of the DEM Party. A meeting request has also been made with the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş. To increase and broaden societal support for the demands for peace and democracy, meetings are planned with various institutions representing different segments of society.

The meeting, scheduled for today, at 3:00 PM at the DEM Party Headquarters in Ankara, will be attended by the following signatories: Professor Ahmet Haşim Köse, former Member of Parliament for the 23rd Term Akın Birdal, writer Ayşegül Devecioğlu, Professor Baskın Oran, Professor Fatma Gök, former Members of Parliament for the 25th, 26th, and 27th terms Filiz Kerestecioğlu, Associate Professor Dr. Fikret Başkaya, former Member of Parliament for the 18th Term Kamil Ateşoğulları, former Member of Parliament for the 24th Term and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights Rıza Türmen, Professor Şebnem Oğuz, Professor Yakın Ertürk, and Professor Yasemin Özgün.
