Solidarity hunger strikes in Lavrio and Limassol

Solidarity hunger strikes in support of political prisoners in Turkey are taking place in Greece and Cyprus.

To support the hunger strike of political prisoners in Turkey for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan, solidarity actions are also taking place in the Lavrio refugee camp in Greece and in Limassol in Cyprus.

In the self-administered Lavrio camp, a hunger strike with varying participation has been going on for a month. Led by the Kurdish Youth Movement and the Kurdistan Cultural Center, groups of eight have each been on hunger strike for five days since January 4.

One of the activists, Murat Aktaş, explains the background of the action: "We want to stand by the political prisoners and demonstrate the will of the Kurdish people. Isolation means torture. The oppression of the Kurdish people means torture. This is what we are resisting."

A similar action has been launched in Limassol to stand by the prisoners and demand an end to Abdullah Öcalan's isolation. At the Teofilos cultural association, seven Kurds have gone on a solidarity hunger strike. The action will be carried out by two alternating groups for ten days. Activist Kamil Akalin explained that this is also a protest against the Turkish attacks on Kurdistan: "We will continue to fight until the isolation and oppression in Turkish prisons and the occupation attacks on Kurdistan stop."
