Last weekend there was an election in the Swiss canton of Ticino. 14 lists competed and the joint list of the Socialist Party (SP) and the Alternative Forum (Forum Alternativo) received 27 percent of the votes and sent 12 deputies to the 90-member Ticino Parliament. Among the elected deputies, there was a well-known name among the Kurds, Dr. Josef Beppe Savary.
Savary is both the secretary of the Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan Committee in Switzerland and the Swiss Director of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). He was running on the Alternative Forum's list. In addition to Savary, a friend of the Kurds, Lisa Boscolo, was also among those who entered the parliament.
Switzerland has a federal structure. Apart from the federal parliament, each canton has its own parliament.
