The Supreme Court upheld the 7 years and 6 months prison sentence against former HDP Deputy Selma Irmak.
Selma Irmak was accused of "membership of an illegal organization" by a local court for her speeches and the demonstrations she attended when she was co-chair of the DTK in 2015-16, and was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison.
The 16th Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals upheld this sentence as well as a 18-month sentence ruled by the Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court on charges of "making propaganda for an illegal organization". The Supreme Court decision argued that the DTK (Democratic Society Congress) was identical to the KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union).
Lawyers will appeal to the Constitutional Court against the ruling.
If the Constitutional Court does not find a violation in the individual application submitted by the lawyers, the DTK will also be accepted by judicial decision as an illegal entity.
