Sweden-Kurdistan Parliamentary Network urges the release of HDP MPs

Sweden-Kurdistan Parliamentary Network protested the ongoing imprisonment of elected HDP MPs and called for their immediate release.

The Kurdistan Parliamentary Network made up of 7 political parties in the Swedish parliament released a written statement regarding the worsening situation in the Turkish state.

Stressing that the already existing right violations in Turkey have gotten worse after the coup attempt of July 15, the Sweden-Kurdistan Parliamentary Network called attention to the attacks on civil society, judiciary and freedom of expression across the country.

Describing the developments in Turkey as unfavorable with regard to human rights, freedom of press and expression and opposition parties, the statement said: "The arrests of journalists, elected politicians and civil society representatives continue in an apparent and arbitrary manner. According to Amnesty International, at least 155 journalists are currently jailed in Turkey and 22 of these haven't been prosecuted yet."

Drawing attention to the attacks on HDP, the third party in Turkish parliament with 59 deputies, the statement pointed out that the recent arrest of HDP Co-chairs and deputies is a major blow against Turkish democracy and parliamentarism.

Remarking that the mass arrest of people's elected representatives is unacceptable and against international conventions, Sweden-Kurdistan Parliamentary Network called for the immediate release of HDP MPs and urged the Turkish state to abide by principles of a state of law.

The Network also called on the European Union to adopt a clear stance and act in order for the realization of democratic reforms and a return to peace process in Turkey.

The Sweden-Kurdistan Parliamentary Network consists of 6 Kurdish MPs in addition to 20 other MPs from all political parties.

The statement on the worsening developments in Turkey is undersigned by deputies Roza Güçlü Hedin (Social Democratic Party), Fredrik Malm (Liberal Party), Margareta Cederfeldt (Moderate Party), Kerstin Lundgren (Center Party), Hans Linde (Left Party), Desirre Pethrus (Christian Democrats) and Jabar Amin (Environmental Party).
