Swedish MP: Barzanis seize the lands of Assyrians and minorities

Masoud Barzani's relatives are reported to be seizing the lands of Assyrians, Syriacs and Êzidîs in South Kurdistan.

In a parliamentary question, Swedish Liberal Party parliamentarian Robert Hannah stated that pressures against Assyrians, Syriacs and Êzidîs are on the rise in South Kurdistan and Masoud Barzani's relatives are seizing the lands of these communities.

Hannah recalled the World Council of Churches said in a report that the minorities in Iraq are the biggest losers in the modern era and were put through genocide by ISIS after the brief hope of a better future with the toppling of Saddam Hussain's regime.

Hannah stated that the Iraqi Government and the Regional Kurdish Administration pressure Assyrians and other minorities in different ways, and these pressures have been brought into question in a documentary published by the Swedish State Television.

Remarking that Masoud Barzani's relatives are seizing the lands of Assyrians and other minorities in Nahla, Hannah said “Reports by Amnesty International also show that large swaths of land belonging to these minorities have been seized by local administrators. Minority groups are for good reason concerned that the Iraqi Government and the Regional Kurdish Administration will not return their lands to them.”

Swedish MP asked Foreign Minister Margot Wallström what her plans are regarding the return of Assyrians' lands and prevention of peshmergas and the central government from using the aid Sweden sends to them against minority groups.

Wallström is expected to answer Hannah's questions on May 9th.
