Switzerland group takes over the vigil for Öcalan in Strasbourg

The Freedom for Ocalan Vigil in Strasbourg is the longest running Kurdish demonstration to date.

The Freedom for Ocalan Vigil held in front of the Council of Europe (CoE) office in Strasbourg, France continues with a new group participating.

A new group of activists from a different country in Europe each week takes over the Freedom for Öcalan Vigil in front of the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg.

The action which has been going on for almost 7 years has been taken over by a three-person group from Switzerland for this week.

A statement on behalf of the new group stressed that the vigil action will continue until the freedom of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan is achieved.

Highlighting the CPT’s role in the isolation of Öcalan, the activists saluted all the activists on indefinite hunger strikes demanding an end to the isolation regime imposed on the Kurdish leader.

The Freedom for Öcalan Vigil had started on June 25, 2012 to call for an end to the aggravated isolation imposed upon Öcalan and to raise awareness for his freedom. Before the vigil, a Long March was held from Geneva to Strasbourg in February 2012 and a hunger strike of 52 days was held during the months of March and April. Representatives from various institutions in Europe and politicians had participated in the hunger strike.

The Freedom for Öcalan Vigil was launched after these demonstrations, and in the six years since, hundreds of thousands of flyers, brochures and booklets have been handed out and Öcalan’s ideas have been communicated to people from dozens of countries throughout the world.

Some two thousand activists have taken over the vigil in more than 300 groups. Artists, politicians, journalists and European allies have taken part in person.
