The Syrian Army reported that four Israeli jets breached Syrian airspace and struck a military site near the city of Palmyra early Friday morning.
According to the statement, Syria's air defenses shot down one of the Israeli jets over "occupied ground" and damaged another with anti-aircraft missiles.
The statement by the Syrian army described the Israeli action as “an aggressive movement in support of ISIS”.
In the meantime, Israeli newspaper Haaretz said this was the most serious incident between the two countries since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war six years ago.
Quoting the Israeli army, Haaretz reported that the aircraft had already returned to Israeli airspace when Syria launched its air-defense rockets.
