Syriac associations and organisations have issued a written statement declaring support for the HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) in the upcoming general elections on June 7 in Turkey and North Kurdistan.
The joint statement which called on Syriacs to go to the polls and vote in favour of the HDP was issued by the European Syriac Union (ESU), BethNahrin Syriac Women Union, Federation of Syriac Associations and Turkey Syriac Women Center.
'Either Democratic Constitution or Bog'
The organisations' statement said: “While fire and bloodshed is surrounding everywhere in the Middle East, everyone waits curiously to see what Turkey's direction will be. The upcoming parliamentary general elections on June 7 is going to play an essential role.” It was highlighted that Turkey would crown the resolution process with a democratic constitution and become a contemporary model for the region or bog down and enter a dark period.
It was also emphasised in the statement that the sovereign nation mentality and fascist policies had become nonfunctional and a new reform process had started with the democratic resolution and peace process.
'The HDP Became an Inclusive Project'
Remarking that the freedom struggles oppressed people's, Kurds being in the first place, societal groups in favour of democracy and progressive intellectuals were making a remarkable effort and sacrifice in order to change Turkey, the joint statement by Syriac associations and organisations continued; “The Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has a power to introduce the denied identities, differences and social richness within this process. HDP and its struggle tradition is a basic factor that makes the reality of peoples and religious beliefs visible, discussible and produce solutions to their problems by forcing the system. The literature developed by the HDP within differences became an inclusive project for answering the reality of all social groups and the basic needs of individuals.”
'Only Alternative'
The statement drew attention to the point that the HDP had gained confidence and sympathy of the Syriac people, saying: “Without disclosing our views, proposals and critiques, we will continue to support the HDP till the end in order to pass the electoral threshold and break the state's anti-democratic policies. Because, the HDP which is the only alternative to the mentality of denial has found an expression as a democratic line and is growing day by day. Thus, we see the HDP's accomplishments as our own gains and own them.”
'All Syriacs Must Support the HDP'
Syriac associations and organisations ended the statement by calling on all Syriacs with a right to vote at home or abroad to go to the polls and vote in favour of the HDP.
