Syriac language taught in Rojava
After years of ban and pressure imposed by the Syrian regime, the Syriac language is now being taught as an official language after the civil revolution in western Kurdistan.
The Syriac lessons are being provided at four schools in the Tirbespiyê city by the Syriac Language Association, Kurdish Language Association (SZK) and the Union of Teachers in Rojava.
The lessons on the language are now being given two days a week and is aimed to be increased in the coming term.
The Syriac language which faced the same fate with the Kurdish language under pressure was taught at private schools and churchs so far.
The Kurdish Language Association (SZK) and the Union of Teachers in western Kurdistan had set up schools in Kurdish in the past months. Three thousand teachers have been trained for Kurdish education in less then two years' time. Kurdish education is now being provided at all official schools where students in the first classes of primary schools will be receiving all lessons in Kurdish, while other students will be taking lessons on the Kurdish language three hours a week.
The teachers had problems with book printing because of the lack of printing houses in the region. The embargos around Rojava are also not allowing them to import books from outside western Kurdistan.
