Syrian regime forces have entered Mayadeen, considered one of the last ISIS strongholds in Syria. Mayadeen is called the security and military capital of the gangs. The city is in the Deir ez-Zor province.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that the regime forces entered Mayadeen with support from Russian air forces and took control of buildings to the west of the city.
Mayadeen and Bukamal in the Euphrates Valley continue into the Iraqi border. They are significant in that they are the last areas ISIS gangs fleeing Raqqa gather in.
Mayadeen is 40 km to the south of Deir ez Zor and has been under ISIS invasion since 2014.
With the Mayadeen operation, Regime forces mainly aim for the Al Omar oil beds to the north east of the city.
These oil beds provided ISIS with 1.7 to 5.1 million dollars every month before they were demolished in an International Coalition airstrike in October 2015.
