Roads leading to Taksim Square in Istanbul have been closed to traffic by police today, Worker’s Day.
Police had surrounded the whole of Taksim Square with barriers to avoid possible celebrations.
Permission to celebrate in the famous Istanbul square was denied by the Governor of the city and trade unions and the 1 May committee has moved the celebration to Bakirkoy.
