Talks between government and strikers in Colombia to resume

The Colombian government and the National Strike Committee are expected to resume talks on 19 January to search for an agreement to put an end to the protests, said Diego Molano, designated by President Ivan Duque to lead the National Dialogue.

The National Strike Committee has said that meetings would be held from 15 to 29 January at local, municipal, departmental and regional levels in preparation for the national meeting to be held on 30-31 January with the committee and other organizations from various sectors.

Protesters and organizations continue to strike against the policies implemented by Colomabin President Ivan Duque and the resurgence of violence in the country.

On 21 November, millions of Colombians took to the streets to hold the biggest protest against Duque since he came to power in August 2018.

The people reject a neoliberal policy package which seeks to raise the compulsory retirement age, increase workers' contributions to the pension system, reduce the state's role in social security, lower the young people's minimum wage.

In addition Colombians are concerned about the government's little commitment to the Havana Peace Agreement signed in the Cuban capital between the government of Manuel Santos and the FARC guerrillas.
