Ten Turkish soldiers have died and around 70 others were injured following an attack on a military convoy in Bingöl on Tuesday.
According to reports, a fire broke out after the attack which took place at around 12:45 local time on the Bingöl-Muþ highway near the village of Kardeþler. It is understood the attack was carried out with rocket launchers and long barreled weapons. The convoy was made up of five buses carrying soldiers and and ten armored vehicles.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Seven of the injured are in serious condition, according to Governor of Bingöl Hakan Güvençer.Turkish sources say 70 soldiers were injured in the attack.
Following the attack, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan met Chief of Defence Necdet Özel in the evening. No details have been disclosed about the meeting which lasted two and a half hour. Following the meeting with Özel, PM also had a phone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama. Turkish PM and U.S. President are reported to have offered mutual condolence for the Bingöl attack and the killing of U.S. embassador and embassy workers in Libya.
