Tension high on South Kurdistan border
Turkish army has made a military built-up with more than 500 soldiers, armored vehicles and cobra type helicopters on South Kurdistan border after a group of local residents in three villages of Şırnak's Uludere district have crossed the border with 100 mules for border trade on Wednesday.
Villagers in the region have marched to the borderline to prevent any potential operation like the one in Roboski which claimed the life of 34 civilians, mostly children, on 28 December 2011. Tension continues in the area as people have concerns over a new massacre of civilians involved in border trade.
According to the information received from the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) members who are also waiting at the border with local residents, the people want soldiers to withdraw from the border and to allow the passing of villagers.
In response to the military blockage, villagers say they have to cross the border for trade which they say is their only source of income. “We have to go, even if they kill 34 other people of us”, they say.
