"This is not an appointment, it is a political coup"

ÖHP lawyer Sevda Aydın resigned from her duty as an auditor to protest the seizure of the municipalities of Amed, Van and Mardin. She said:"As a rights defender, I have to defend my people, as a lawyer I have to say that this is coup, not an appointment."

Following the seizure of Van Metropolitan Municipality, three lawyers who are members of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), and served as auditors at the General Directorate of Water and Sewerage Works (VASKİ), resigned from their duties.

Lawyers Cahit Ertan, Medeni Gür and Sevda Aydın said they cannot continue in their posts as a sign of respect to the will of the people.

Lawyer Sevda Aydın, member of the ÖHP, said that the reasons used by the Ministry of Interior for the appointment of the trusees have been "pretexts" and he has been using the Article of the Constitution relating to the "judicial assurance" of organisms, bending it as he pleased. "We cannot accept this" said the lawyer.

Reminding that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had threatened months before the elections to 'appoint trustees, should certain people be elected', Aydın asked "how can a President issue such threats" and ahdded: "I will be defending the right of my people as a rights defender. In this case, I couldn't let public money to be spent these way, so I resigned. In short, I compare the trustees to Leviathan."

Lawyer Aydın added: "First of all, as a lawyer, I call this a coup, not an appointment. It is a fascist political sanction. It's nothing more than bullying the people and the representatives the people elected when he could not get elected. In addition, if we look at the practices of the trustees in the previous period, we will understand the reason why we refuse to work with the trustees. They attacked women's achievement, they attacked Kurds, they took down Kurdish names, they closed down cultural centers."
