Thousands against "Wall of Shame"

Thousands of people gathered in Nusaybin (Mardin) on Sunday to protest against the “wall of shame” Turkey has started to build between the Nusaybin and the city of Qamishlo in west Kurdistan.

Among the demonstrators were also BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) Mardin deputy Erol Dora, mayors of Kızıltepe, Nusaybin and many other BDP executives and members of the Party Assembly.

Demonstrators were attacked by police as they started a march from Şirin Boulevard to the border point where the ball is being built. Clashes broke out in the area as protestors responded to the police, later expanded across the district and lasted till late evening.

Police denied permission for the march on the grounds of the mined terrain in the border area, and also claiming that a group of demonstrators would incite provocation. Talks between deputy Dora and the governor of Mardin remained inconclusive as police continued to deny permission for the march.

Demonstrators therewith started their march to the border but were soon later attacked by police forces deployed in the area. A group managed to reach the border as others clashed with police.

The group was supported here by thousands of people coming from the Qamishlo side, carrying flags of the YPG (People's Defense Units) and chanting slogans in favor of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.

After threatening the masses on both sides of the border, Turkish police attacked people and led to violent clashes with demonstrators that later expanded to larger areas and lasted till the evening.

Police also attacked people who had gathered outside the Mitani Cultural Centre. Dozens were taken into custody and effected by the intense tear gas police used. Six were taken to Qamishlo hospital.
