Thousands in the village of Kayacık (Hêzan) in Amed's Lice district marched to the village's military post where soldiers had opened fire on people protesting the construction of additional buildings to military posts on 28 June.
A protestor, Medeni Yıldırım, 18, was killed and ten people were severely wounded in the attack which increased tension in the Kurdish region where people are expecting a democratic and peaceful solution to the Kurdish problem and stage demos calling on the government to take steps for the advancement of the resolution process, and carrying banners which read “We want peace, not war”.
Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Amed deputy Nursel Aydoğan and BDP Amed organization's deputy co-chair Zübeyde Zümrüt, as well as the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Amed chairperson Ramazan karakaya, activists of Peace Mothers Initiative and KESK (Confederation of Public Workers' Unions) were among those who took part in the protest march.
Speaking in front of the post, BDP deputy Nursel Aydoğan said that it was not possible to accept the murder of a person in the currently ongoing resolution process which -she underlined- Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan initiated to make sure that no person in the country suffers a single harm.
"The war and the conflict environment in this country is going on for 30 years now, having taken the life of thousands of people by now. The resolution process promised an end to deaths which are however still continuing", she said and urged the AKP government to end its present policies in order for the achievement of a solution basing on the equality, fraternity and freedom of Turkish and Kurdish peoples.
She pointed out that the process can make no headway should Kurds continue to be killed, remarking that the Kurdish people have no tolerance left to deaths and tears.
Aydoğan said the government was not serious about the solution of the Kurdish question, and that it should see the significance of PKK's (Kurdistan Workers' Party) ceasefire and withdrawal from Turkish borders."There will be no obstacle to peace should the government display the same seriousness with the PKK", she underlined.
Aydoğan called on the government to take steps for the creation of an environment of mutual trust, remarking that the first step should be to shed light on the murder of Medeni Yıldırım and the punishment of those responsible for his death. She also called for the ending of the activities at military posts in the Kurdish region and the construction of additional ones to them.
Speaking after, Medeni Yıldırım's aunt said that the increasing military activity in the region signals for preparation for a war. She demanded the trial and punishment of those responsible for Medeni's death. "He has been the first martyr of the peace process, let him be the last one".
The speeches were followed by a sit-in in front of the post.
