Tens of thousands of Basques took to the streets in Bilbao and expressed their support to the ETA members currently in prison.
Led by the Solidarity with Basque Political Prisoners Collective (EPPK), tens of thousands of people marched in Bilbao to support ETA members currently in prison. According to Gara newspaper, at least 78 thousand people participated in the march. Protestors expressed support for ETA members in prison and protested the mistreatment that these prisoners experience.
EPPK had given up on its demand that ETA members be released from prison, but continues to argue that each prisoner should be evaluated individually. According to Etxerat, an association of the families of prisoners, there are 279 ETA members in 42 prisons across Spain and 79 ETA members in prison in France. Etxerat describes the conditions under which these prisoners live as very bad.
ETA was established in 1959 for the freedom of Basque country, and had announced that it ended its armed struggle in 2011. Last month, Basque peace defenders destroying guns belonging to ETA were detained in south France, but were released after police realized that they were not ETA members.
