Thousands of people gathered in front of the Ahmet Kaya Cultural Centre in Paris to walk united to the large demonstration on the Place de la République. The cultural centre was the scene of a vigil last night, and many demonstrators are also expected from other European countries. The rally will start at 12 noon.
Three people were shot dead in front of the Kurdish Cultural Centre on Friday; a long-time revolutionary, Evîn Goyî (Emine Kara), musician Mîr Perwer (M. Şirin Aydın) and patriot Abdurrahman Kızıl. Other people were injured and are being treated in hospital.
The assassin had been released from prison ten days ago and should have been under state supervision. He came to the cultural centre with a bag full of ammunition. According to witnesses, he was dropped off by a car. He then shot several times at people in front of the cultural centre as well as at a Kurdish restaurant and a Kurdish hairdressing salon opposite. He was overpowered by those present at the hair salon. The police arrived forty minutes after the targeted shooting at the three Kurdish establishments, and ambulances after thirty minutes. According to reports, injured people died of blood loss.
Agit Polat, spokesperson for the Democratic Kurdish Council in France (CDK-F), explained at a press conference on Friday that Kurdish representatives have spoken to the French security authorities twice in the last three weeks and demanded protective measures. They are now being assured of this by politicians and the judiciary - after three deaths and three injuries. Today's demonstration in Paris is therefore also directed against the French state and the thesis of a racist lone perpetrator. Kurdish organisations are convinced that it cannot be a coincidence that ten years after the still unpunished MIT attack against three Kurdish women in the Kurdistan Information Centre in Paris, another targeted attack is taking place.
