Trial against "Peace Groups" resumed

The trial against members of the Democratic Solution and Peace Group who entered Turkey crossing the border at Habur Border Gate in October of 2009 resumed at Diyarbakýr 6th High Criminal Court on Friday.

16 members of the Kandil and Maxmur Peace Groups, which came to Turkey as a sign of goodwill upon the call of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan , were each sentenced to one year and eight months in prison on the grounds of "spreading propaganda for an illegal organization". The group members have once again been taken to court recently as the court of appeals reversed the prison sentence to the adjournment of the prosecution.

Four of the defendants were provided with interpreter during yesterday's trial, while others were however denied to express themselves in Kurdish, which the court board rejected, saying that "The defendants spoke in a language we think is Kurdish".
