Turkey declares 48 border areas “restricted military zone"

The Office of Antep Governor has declared almost the entire area along the border line a restricted military zone. The region lies opposite Azaz, ar-Rai and Jarablus in northern Syria.

In the province of Antep, almost the entire area along the Turkey-Syria border line has been declared a restricted military zone for the period from 1 January to 15 January 2020.

As the Antep governor's office announced on Monday, the measure affects 48 areas between the four border posts of Türkyurdu, Karkamış, Köprübatı and Fuat Oğuzcan and serves "to guarantee security in the border area as well as the welfare of the population".

Remarking that access to the special security area is prohibited, the declaration said that any and all kinds of traffic and human activity will be controlled and will be banned when deemed necessary by the provincial gendarmerie and police authorities.

Convoy for Syrian jihadists to Libya?

Turkey has so far sent some 300 mercenaries from Syria to Libya to take part in military operations against the troops of General Khalifa Haftar. A further 1,000 Islamists are to be transferred to the North African country in the next few days. According to various reports, these mercenary factions include the so-called Sultan Murad Brigade, Faylaq al-Sham and Suqour al-Sham, who have committed war crimes against the Kurdish civilian population in Afrin and other regions of northern and eastern Syria on behalf of the AKP regime in Ankara.
