Turkish military presence on Iraqi parliament's agenda

The people of Sheladize in Kurdistan Region on January 26 rose up against the killing of four civilians by the occupying Turkish army, and stormed the Sire Turkish base. During the protests, 2 civilians were killed and six others were severely injured.

The Bina and Sairun fractions of the Iraqi Federal Parliament a few days ago drafted a bill in order to demand foreign military forces to withdraw from Iraqi territory.

The draft which will be submitted to the Parliament, has already gained support from different parties.

Bahar Muhammad, MP from the Gorran (Change) Movement stated that they support the draft and urged the federal government to speak up against the Turkish attacks.

“The Iraqi government must act against the [Turkish] attacks. The government is responsible for the security in the country. The KRG likewise must stand against the attacks. The aerial bombardments are a clear breach of Iraq’s sovereignty and violate human rights,” said Muhammad.

Muhammad mentioned that the KRG government instead of taking a stance against the Turkish state, blames the PKK, and said: “Even if that made sense, it doesn’t mean that any state can violate the Iraqi sovereignty to target civilians.”

“When the parliament reopens the sessions, we will demand the government and the president to declare a stance against the Turkish attacks,” Muhammad added.

Bahar Muhammad stated that they will advocate a draft for the removal of foreign forces from Iraq, adding that supporting such draft would be a ‘national duty’.

The New Generation urged the Iraqi government

The New Generation Movement issued a statement regarding the Turkish state attacks against the people who protested occupation and bombardment.

Condemning the Turkish aggression, the New Generation said: “The people of Sheladize rose up against the aerial bombardment of Behdinan area in Kurdistan Region, later they were targeted by the oppressive Turkish state forces. A number of protesters were killed and injured. The Asayish forces should not have threatened the people. We urge the Iraqi government to defend the borders and our people. Because the local authority in Kurdistan Region does not protect its own people, yet oppresses the people for its interests.”

The Labor Party: Turkish bases are threatening the Kurdistan Region

Kurdistan Labor Party pointed to the anger of the civilian people against the massacres committed by the Turkish state, and said: “Turkish state once again targeted the people, and killed civilians. Those who do not accept the killing of the civilians, set fire to a Turkish base. We condemn the Turkish state because it murders the civilians. Turkish bases in the region are threatening the lives of the people.”

“The Turkish bases violate the sovereignty of Kurdistan Region and Iraq. Turkey should immediately withdraw its forces from the region. Instead of bombardment and shelling, it must look for peace and a solution,” the statement by the Labor Party added.
