Turkish soldiers have become border executioners

Turkish soldiers at the border are acting with complete impunity as they target civilians. Since the revolution took place in Rojava (West Kurdistan) in July 2012, at least 30 civilians have been slaughtered on the border between North and West Kurdistan.

While the Turkish state embraces the gangs, that are the enemies of humanity, it does not hesitate to target civilians who support the Kobanê resistance, who go to provide humanitarian aid or are maintaining a vigil at the border.

Every year the Turkish state extra judicially executes dozens of people on the borders that divide Kurdistan. Kader Ortakaya was the latest victim of these attacks. 28 year-old Ortakaya, from Siverek, came from Istanbul about a month ago to join the vigil in Pirsus. Ortakaya, a student at Marmara University, was shot in the head by Turkish soldiers as she crossed the border to support the Kobanê resistance on 6 November. Kader was the only woman activist in the group crossing the border. Three days before that, on 3 November, a civilian from Kobanê died in agony in front of watching Turkish soldiers. 32-year-old Necip Reşad Seydi was next to vehicles in the border area near the village of Siwêdê in Suruç when he was wounded in the thigh by shots fired by ISIS gangs.

According to eye witnesses, Turkish troops did not allow the wounded man to be assisted for 2 hours. After Seydi died of loss of blood, his body was taken to the military post.

These executions on the Kobanê border have been continuing for years, however since the ISIS gangs launched their attacks in July, there has been a large increase.

HDP Şırnak MP Faysal Sarıyıldız put down a written question in Parliament to Interior Minister Efkan Ala on 31 October regarding the executions at the Kobanê border. Sarıyıldız asked: "Are the executions at the Rojava border the result of the government's policy of not recognising and isolating Rojava?" diye sordu. According to Sarıyıldız, at least 30 people have died on the Turkey-Rojava border since 2012 from gunshots.

When executions from other parts of Kurdistan are included, the balance sheet becomes worse still.

On 30 October, Turkish troops shot a person by the name of Mustafa Xelil on the Kobanê border. He was taken to hospital with a serious facial wound.

On 26 September two brothers were shot as they tried to reach North Kurdistan from Kobanê. One died and the other was wounded. Another person was also wounded on the same day. Both received treatment in Kobanê.

On 9 October during solidarity actions for Kobanê Turkish soldiers shot dead an 8-year-old child on the Nusaybin-Qamişlo border and wounded 13 others. Ten of the wounded were from Nusaybin and 3 from Qamişlo.

Hardly a month goes by without an execution at the border. On 8 September, Mistefa Husên was deliberately targeted by Turkish troops and shot dead as he waited for his relatives on the Afrin border. No one has been prosecuted for these murders, as troops continue to act with absolute impunity.

According to the Human Rights Association (IHD) Report of 2013, at least 21 people were killed along the border, 3 of them children, while 58 people were wounded. In 2012 the figure was 21 dead and 36 wounded. This figure does not include the dozens of executions carried out by the Iranian regime along its border.
