Two ill prisoners on hunger strike

Two ill prisoners in Metris R Type Prison have gone on a three-day hunger strike to protest their continued imprisonment despite Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) reports confirming that they cannot remain in jail.

Ali Haydar Yıldız and Ergin Aktaş said they are protesting against the inhuman treatments they face in prison and the denial of treatment they need. Yıldız and Aktaş said they would turn their protest to indefinite and irreversible hunger strike unless their conditions are improved.

Yıldız is paralyzed since 9 August 2012 when he was shot with six bullets during a robbery in Istanbul's Pendik district. He has inflamed bruises on his back for being confined to bed. He is not allowed to have the wounds on his body dressed, which he is meant to do every day. Istanbul 23rd High Criminal Court has not released him yet despite the ATK report which says that he cannot maintain his life by himself and is in need of help from someone else.

Aktaş, who has none of his hands and cannot even meet his basic daily needs, is also being held in prison despite the ATK report he received on 12 July 2013 which said that he “cannot remain in jail”. The prison administration also denied him permission to use the gloves his relatives brought to him, saying that Aktaş needed to get a report to take the gloves.
