There are only a few days left to one of the most important elections in our history. However, the previous elections in the last twenty-one years and the anti-democratic attitude of the current government raises doubts about election safety.
Those who have doubts are not wrong at all. No partner of the ruling bloc has yet convinced the public that elections will be fair, and that they will respect the results.
In fact, all government partners, especially Erdogan, seem to act otherwise. MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli has openly threatened the opposition recently, saying that “they will either get a life sentence or get a bullet shot!”. A few days ago, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said that the 14 May election was a kind of coup d’etat.
On top of that, Erdogan said: "This nation will not grant power to those who will win the elections with the support of Qandil!"
But all of these are attempts to break the will of the voters to defeat this government through elections. Let’s suppose that the opposition bloc won the elections and the AKP/MHP fascism did not want to leave power. This would only make things more difficult for them. All these remarks only show that the regime is alarmed.
The most important trademark of Erdogan's 21-year rule is that he has always succeeded in winning the consent of society in some way. For this very reason, Erdogan could easily bid defiance to the rest of the world.
No matter what, Erdoğan managed to be elected each time. As Turkey’s society kept electing Erdogan, who could ever question his power? This is exactly why Erdogan keeps harping on the "will of the nation". Plus, it is no longer possible to remove a government from power through a coup d’etat, as was the case during the times of the cold war.
So, for all those who want to beat the Erdogan regime both at home and abroad, there is no choice but to defeat him through democratic elections. If defeated in elections, Erdogan would lose the morale supremacy. No institution of the state, including the security bureaucracy, would pay allegiance to an Erdogan who has lost the elections.
In this case, the rage against Erdogan would increase inside; many bureaucrats would begin to work with the opposition, and even secretly leak information to the opposition. The image of Erdoğan as someone who is strong and wins elections in every situation, would be destroyed.
If Erdogan maintains his power despite an election defeat, he cannot easily threaten opposition circles at home and neighbouring countries anymore. In particular, he cannot bid defiance to the US and Europe as he used to. The Erdogan regime would become even more cowardly and vulnerable.
Elections have never been this critical in the history of Turkey. In the past, no matter who came to power, secret partners of the government, especially the army, continued to rule the country because of the tutelage regime.
But this situation has long changed. Erdogan eliminated all the tutelary institutions that were effective in the past in order to make room for himself. Under the current circumstances, these structures do not have any remarkable impact on society.
Therefore, it has become more important than before to come to power in Turkey by winning consent. Large sections of society do not obey any power that rejects popular consent.
Society has thus come to a critical threshold: Either we will defeat fascism through elections and pave the way for a new Turkey, or Turkey will enter a dark period that may last even longer.
The Kurds have been ready for this for a very long time, but it took a long time for Turkey’s society to confront AKP/MHP fascism; but now is the time to do so. If they are defeated in the elections, they will have to leave and be brought to account for all the evil they have done.
Now we have two tasks before us: the first is to ensure that everyone votes, and the second is to ensure the safety of the ballot boxes. Our people will determine the fate of the whole country. It is the duty of every patriot to vote in these elections.
I wish all my friends who will monitor the elections success!
