Two-year prison sentence sought for HDP co-chair Demirtaş

Two-year prison sentence was sought for HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş as he was sued.

The investigation against HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş for allegedly “insulting the Turkish Republic government” during a speech on September 8, 2015 has been finalized.

After the removal of parliamentary immunities, Demirtaş was summoned to testify and indicted by Diyarbakır 7th Criminal Court of First Instance after he rejected to give his statement.

The prosecutor demanded that Demirtaş be imprisoned between 6 months and 2 years, and be deprived of his “right to elect and be elected” in accordance with the 53-1 article of the Turkish Criminal Code.
