Unionists demand release of Prof. Üstün and HDP politicians

Third Airport Workers Solidarity Platform organized an action in front of Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy to demand the release of Professor Beyza Üstün.

HDP Istanbul Provincial co-chair Erdal Avcı also attended the action and said: “You cannot silence those who struggle for science, nature, labor and peace.” A banner reading ‘release Beyza Üstün and all prisoners’ was opened.

During the action slogans were chanted and a statement was read on behalf of the Third Airport Workers' Solidarity Platform by Nihat Demir, General Secretary of Dev-Yapı-Iş Union.

Reminding that 17 HDP politicians were arrested together with Professor Beyza Üstün at the end of a hearing that their lawyers were not even allowed to attend, Demir said: “Beyza Üstün is a scientist who has trained hundreds of students. She argues that struggles for labor and ecology are bound together. While doing her research, she was always actively involved in the struggle. Beyza Üstün is in favor of democracy. She is an advocate of peace. Beyza Üstün is a friend of streams, trees, insects, defenders of peace, the oppressed, the marginalized, the workers. She is an advocate of life. She is the enemy of those who see nature as a field of income, those who dry our streams, cut down our trees, make animals homeless, she is against war-makers, marginalizers and bosses. She is against those who want to destroy life."

Reminding that Üstün opposed the construction of the Third Airport with scientific data from the very beginning, Demir reminded that she was a advocate of life who supported the "We are not slaves" rebellion that the workers started because they did not want to die while working.

Emphasizing that unlawful arrests against the HDP are unacceptable, Demir noted that this operation was carried out to intimidate all those who defend life, peace, freedom, democracy, coexistence, nature, labor and science, especially the Kurdish people.

Demir demanded the release of Beyza Üstün and all those arrested and added: "You will not be able to silence those who are the voice of science, labor, nature and peace!"
