US presence in Iraq to be discussed in Parliament

The Iraqi Parliament will today hold an extraordinary session to discuss a motion for the leave of US troops from the country.

The Iraqi Parliament will convene today after the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani of the Quds Force and Hash al-Shaabi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a US raid in Baghdad two days ago.

During Sunday’s extraordinary session members of the parliament will discuss and then vote a draft resolution for the deportation of the US troops.

Ammar al-Shibli, a member of the parliamentary law commission, stated that there was no need for the US troops to remain in Iraq anymore after the defeat of ISIS, remarking that the Iraqi army could well protect the country.

Shibli’s statement came shortly after Hadi al-Amiri, the new leader of Hashd al-Shaabi, called for the expulsion of American forces from the country.

Several Shi’ite leaders have made similar statements after the assassination of Soleimani.

As many as 5,000 US troops are stationed in Iraq. According to the US army, these forces are deployed in the region not for battle but for consultancy.

In the event of the Parliament voting for the expulsion of the US troops, the decision has to be implemented by the government of Iraq. It is wondered which path the Iraqi government will take as the country is already on a shaky ground due to continued protest demonstrations.
