A solidarity action in support of the demands of political prisoners in Turkey has been taking place since last week in front of the United Nations (UN) office in Geneva. Since November 27, prisoners have been protesting with a hunger strike against the isolation of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on the prison island of Imrali and the total disenfranchisement in detention centers throughout the country. Solidarity with the hunger striking prisoners is demanded in the vigil in Geneva, organized by the umbrella organization of democratic Kurdish associations in Switzerland (CDK-S) in the framework of the KCK campaign "End isolation, fascism and occupation - time for freedom".
The action was taken over by activists from the Bern Kurdish Assembly today. The activists continue their protest with great morale and enthusiasm despite unfavorable weather conditions and pandemic restrictions. They are visited by Kurds living in the surrounding cities.
Today’s part of the action began with a minute of silence in memory of all those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom.
Speaking here, Salih Sağlam from Geneva Kurdish Community Center commended the resistance of political prisoners against the isolation and rights violations executed by the Turkish state fascism.
Sağlam said; “The isolation torture of the Turkish fascism is nothing new. The isolation on our leader has indeed continued for 21 years now. The isolation could be broken through for a short period of time thanks to the resistance of the Kurdish people, but this was not enough. We will continue our action here until we make the demands of prisoners heard and answered.”
