Vigil for Öcalan continues in the 127th week

The vigil action carried out in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg in demand of freedom for the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and the political prisoners in Turkey has been taken over in its 127th week by a group from the German city of Stuttgart.

The people joining the vigil which started on 25 June 2012 continue highlighting their demand in front of the EP, collecting signatures as well as distributing leaflets and brochures providing information about latest developments in the Kurdistan territory.

This week’s vigil has been joined by four people from Stuttgart who greeted the Kobanê resistance that has now left two months behind, and chanted slogans in support of it as they took over the vigil from another group.

The activists from Stuttgart told that they were taking part in the vigil as they strongly believed that Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is the subject and a part of the Kurdish Liberation Movement has to be released and gain his freedom back.

The activists said the Kurdish people have to continue their struggle under all conditions and at all ages as the cruel policies imposed on the Kurds have already exceeded the limits of toleration. The activists drew attention to the fact that the demonstrations that took place all over Turkey and Kurdistan against the massacres perpetrated by the ISIS gangs in Rojava and Sinjar ended upon a single word of Öcalan as the demonstrations turned violent. The activists stressed that this fact has once again proved Abdullah Öcalan to be the Kurdish people’s leader.

The activists further emphasised that the world states also recognised the status of Öcalan but still failed to put sufficient and influential pressure on Turkey about the resolution process and the freedom of Öcalan.

The activists said the ban on PKK is but a political decision, adding that PKK by no means deserves to be banned and listed as a terror organisation as it helped all the innocent people in Rojava and Sinjar without discriminating them according to their ethnic or religious identities.

The vigil for Freedom for Öcalan that started on 25 June 2012 continues 7 days of the week between 07:30 and 17:00. The vigil action, which has been participated by hundreds of Kurdish people so far, aims to raise awareness about the Kurdish problem and the freedom of Öcalan among the European community. In the vigil action, 235 thousand leaflets in English, German and French informing about the demands of the activists, and 38 thousand copies of Öcalan's biography have been distributed so far.

Moreover, around 35 thousands of brochures entitled “War and Peace in Kurdistan”, and 13 info leaflets about the killing of three Kurdish women in Paris have been distributed. The activists also collect signatures for the freedom of the Kurdish Leader Abdullah Öcalan and the political prisoners in Turkey. 20 thousand 800 signatures have been collected so far.

The Freedom Vigil is the longest indefinite and irreversible protest carried out by the Kurdish people living in Europe.
