White scarved mothers not allowed in May 1 celebrations in Amed

May 1 celebrations led by the KESK, DISK, Amed Chamber of Medicine and TMMOB have started in Amed. The police is not allowing mothers wearing white headscarves in to the celebration grounds.

The people of Amed are rushing to Istasyon Square to celebrate May 1 Workers’ Day. All roads leading to the Istasyon Square have been cut off by police barricades and large numbers of police officers have been deployed in the city. Banners reading “Biji Yeke Gulane”, “To the Streets for Peace and Labor”, “Speak up for Children Who Can’t”, “Peace Becomes You Amed” and “Our Language is Our Honor We Are Here for Our Language” were put up around the square.

“AKP WILL ANSWER TO THE PEOPLE”

Revolutionary Workers’ Unions Confederation (DISK), KESK, Turkey’s Chamber of Medicine (TTB) and Turkey’s Journalists Union (TGS) have arrived at the grounds with their banners and corteges. Women working in the Baglar district’s Jiyan Neighborhood Market were also in the corteges where people frequently chanted, “The day will come the tide will turn, the AKP will answer to the people” and “We prevail through resistance”.

MOTHERS BARRED

The police stopped women attending the rally with their white headscarves and threatened many to take of their scarves, otherwise they would not be allowed in. The women said they would not go in if the police confiscated their scarves. Mothers and other women are protesting the ban with a sit-in.
